Team Trail Riders IRL Racing were out in force at the fourth stop of the British Downhill Series in Wales with Oisin O’Callaghan claiming second overall in Youths.
Returning to BDS action for round four, O’Callaghan joined by Liam Wolfe and Ronan Gahan all enjoyed top results despite some tricky conditions in Rhyd y Felin, Wales.
Arriving Friday, the team set up pits and checked out the track keen for Saturday practice sessions. Adapting well to the mixture of clay, shale and grassy sections, all three riders felt up to speed and ready to turn it up if needed for Sunday’s showdown.
However, things were to change drastically as heavy overnight rain completely changed the conditions for all. The night’s deluge ensured the ground became greasy and slick.
Podium joy for O’Callaghan
In what’s been a stellar season so far for the 15-year-old, which included a Crankworx podium, O’Callaghan was hungry to keep that momentum rolling despite the weather.
Clocking in a very impressive third in seeding, he showed he wasn’t fazed. With conditions the same for all, the youngster got on with the job in hand to lead with just one rider to go. Unfortunately just pipped at the post, the runner-up result still ensured a season’s best in the BDS.
Gahan and Wolfe targeting top 10
Competing in the highly competitive Junior category, Wolfe and Gahan looked to match their teammate’s pace. Surviving seeding, they positioned themselves in a strong position leading into their race runs. And with a delayed start, conditions were beginning to dry out.
With his sights firmly set on a top 10 score, Gahan judged the conditions perfectly pushing hardest where possible and holding back where needed. It paid off as he stopped the clocks for eighth and less than three seconds shy of a top five result.
Also chasing a top 10 result, Wolfe came within touching distance of it, finishing 12th. In what’s proving to be a highly competitive field of Junior riders, he was just four tenths of a second away from dipping inside the top 10 and less than three seconds off his teammate Gahan in eighth.
The fifth and final round of the HSBC UK British Downhill Series takes place in Bringewood on September 22/23.

Big achievement this weekend at Bala BDS. 9th place in a very tricky seeding run fighting the welsh mud, then a race run that slid me into 8th in the Junior catagory. ❌ 🔴 ❌ 🔴 @trailridersirlracing @cubebikesuk @cubebikesnl @mudhugger2 @officialleatt @dtswiss @saddleback_ltd @extra_uk @oakleybike @tld_bike @hotlines_europe @ridebontrager #weridecb #scienceofthrill #leattfamily #stayshmokey #shmokeybacon #bikes #bicycle #pedal #bicyclelove #instatags #bikelife #bikeride
