It’s time to take the bull by the horns for the 12th edition of Da Cooley Thriller MTB Marathon this weekend in Carlingford.
The longest running MTB Marathon in Ireland, Da Cooley Thriller is a beast of a race taking competitors long and deep in the Cooley Mountains of Co. Louth.
Now gearing up for its 12th edition this Saturday August 10, those up for the challenge will face an epic 52-kilometre course that will test both physical and mental strengths of all.
In 2018 the race was won by three-time UCI XC Veteran World Champ Robin Seymour. Seymour set the benchmark, smashing the three-hour barrier by almost seven minutes.
Despite a character building ‘wet forecast’ expected for Saturday, conditions are said to be running sweet, so all eyes will be set to the sharp end of the field to see if the three-hour barrier will be broken once more in 2019.
The Highest Point In The Wee County
Racing begins in Carlingford at 10am sharp with a neutral liaison through the village. Competitors then face a four-kilometre section of fire road aimed at ‘thinning’ the pack before tackling a 10-kilometre road climb up to the Mast and into the heart of the Cooleys.
From the highest point of the wee county Louth, it’s then all single-track trail through Ballymakellet, Lumpers and back into Carlingford to the finish line at Foy Centre.
For those looking a softer challenge, there is the option of the shorter 21-kilometre course to dip your toe into MTB Marathon racing.
Sign on and registration takes place at the Foy Centre, Carlingford at 7pm Friday August 9 and from 7.30am on Saturday August 10.
