Irish-owned MODMO have begun crowdfunding for the Bekan – it’s a SMART tail light integrated into your bicycle’s seat post. And they’ve almost reached their target.
If you like clean lines then there’s a good chance you’re going to love the look of Bekan.
Not something we’ve seen before, it looks like one of those innovate lightbulb-moment ideas that makes you wonder why it’s not been done before.
What Is Bekan?
The Bekan is basically a seat post internally fitted with 20 COB LEDs, motion sensors, accelerometers and battery management system all sealed within a weather-resistant housing.
The design of the 20 LED lights provide 180-degree visibility.
Making it SMART, the accelerometers allow it to instantly light up when you move, automatically switch off when you stop long enough and also turn from a flashing light into a solid brake light when you slow down. Clever stuff.
Bekan is available in four of the most common sizes: 25.4mm, 27.2mm, 30.9mm, and 31.8mm.
Prices for a Bekan start at €47, including seat post, with shipping March 2020.
Who Are Modmo?
As we mentioned in the beginning, MODMO are Irish-owned, but currently based in Vietnam. It was founded by 21-year-old Irishman Jack O’Sullivan.
That name may ring a bell to many, as Jack competed in the Irish Downhill scene for a few years, while also setting up a cool looking fixie bike brand VITAL FIXIES.
He’s since moved to Vietnam and founded MODMO with the goal of bringing to market a SMART ebike – Bekan is just part of that overall picture.
We’re seeing crowdfunding like INDIEGOGO a new legit way for start-ups to gain capital.
Belfast based See.Sense are one such success stories of the business model, so we wish Jack all the best in getting Bekan out on the road.
